Q: How do you label hot surfaces such as the
coal pipes coming out of a pulverizer?

labeling an oily surface

A: As a former Combustion Engineering Field Service Engineer I'm very familiar with coal pulverizers.

Hot air is blown through the pulverizer to pick up and carry the coal dust out of the pulverizer, through the coal pipes and into the furnace. However, you don't want this air to be too hot as that can lead to fires in the pulverizer.

I have gotten a light burn from touching a hot air duct going into a pulverizer. The coal pipes at the top of the pulverizer will be a little cooler, but we still need to look at using a labeling material that will have a long life at an elevated temperature.

DuraLabel PRO High-Temp Poly Tapes would be a good choice for this application. They are good for temperatures up to 300 degrees. Premium vinyl is good for temperatures up to 200 degrees, so the High-Temp Poly provides just enough extra temperature resistance to work well for this application. If you do have problems with pulverizer fires, then consider using DuraLabel Extreme High-Temperature Poly Tape. It withstands temperatures up to 700 degrees.
