Drum & Barrel Labels

Labels for Industrial Storage Drums 55 Gallon Steel Drums with RTK Labels

Drums are 55 gallon containers used for the shipping and storing of various types of raw materials and chemicals including dry goods, liquids, and solvents. Plastic drums, usually made of polyethylene, are used for caustic and acidic materials while paperboard drums often hold raw food goods.

Metal 55 gallon drums are most commonly used and recognized as a means of storage for hazardous waste and other harmful or flammable substances, including petroleum distillates and alcohol.

OSHA Standards
OSHA requires that any drum holding hazardous material feature a hazard warning label that must be displayed until the drum is emptied, cleaned and completely removed of any hazardous contamination.

Unlabeled drums increase the likeliness of an accidental release of hazardous materials into the environment, which can result in contaminated groundwater and surface water. They also pose hazards of exposure for industrial personnel who come into contact with the unmarked drums.

Although OSHA requires drum labeling, it does not specify what the labels must look like. It only states that labels need to be legible and prominently displayed on the container, with information about the material inside and appropriate hazard warnings.

RTK Labels
Many facilities featuring hazardous materials will choose to label drums with the NFPA diamond or HMIS color bar right-to-know (RTK) labels, both of which are available from DuraLabel for the DuraLabel 7000 printer. Neither format is required, but they both utilize a numeric scale for identifying hazard labels that is well-established and systemized to better assist employee training.

DOT Standards
The Department of Transportation requires that the shippers of chemicals provide labels on drums that properly present the hazards of the content. OSHA states that transportation markings may be combined with right-to-know information to produce one fully-compliant drum label.

Drum Labeling Supplies

The DuraLabel 7000 is a wide format label printer that can produce large-scale diamond and color bar right-to-know labels for prominent, easy-to-read, and fully-compliant drum identification. Typical die-cut RTK labels measure 4” x 6” for universal application. These labels may be too small for prominent display on applications as large as 55 gallon drums, which is why DuraLabel offers SUPER-SIZE RTK labels for the DuraLabel 7000.

Measuring at 7” x 10.5”, these die-cuts are almost twice the size of standard labels to provide space for more text and larger signal words and graphics that grab the eye and increase comprehension.

Drums are produced in various sizes with different materials that may require different labeling supplies. DuraLabel offers a versatile range of supplies that are suited for any type of drum labeling application, including oily surface, reflective, magnetic, and high-tack labeling material

DuraLabel offers over 25 different types of labeling materials for both common and specialized applications. Visit DuraLabelSupplies.com for information on label and sign making supplies or call 1-888-326-9244 to get the right label for you.
