DuraLabel Hazcom and RTK Labeling

Hazard communication (Hazcom for short), also known as Right to Know (RTK), requires employers to communicate to employees of the hazards involved with certain materials they might handle over the course of their work. There are several ways of communicating hazards: formal training, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), and using appropriate labeling techniques.

There are two systems of labeling that may be used, both of which comply with OSHA's labeling requirement. One system is the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) and the other is the Hazardous Material Identification System/Guide (HMIS/HMIG). The NFPA label design is called the fire diamond and it is composed of four colored diamonds combined to form a larger diamond. The colors are blue, red, yellow, and white. The HMIS uses horizontal colored bars stacked on top of each other. The colors HMIS use are blue, red, orange, and white.

DuraLabel supplies have both NFPA and HMIS designs. The separate designs are preprinted onto die-cut stock and cater to both types of RTK users. This ensures that which ever system your facility uses, DuraLabel will have OSHA compliant Hazcom label designs and layout.

DuraLabel 4 Supplies - New RTK Labels

The DuraLabel has a range of RTK die cut labels available. "RTK" stands for "Right To Know". These are labels that are applied to containers to inform employees and emergency response personal about the contents of the container. This is important whether the container holds hazardous materials or not.

Duralabel 4 supplies include both NFPA and Color Bar RTK labels. These are supplied as die cut because the color codes are preprinted on the label. Database software, included with the DuraLabel, is designed to print on these labels. The following label sizes are available:

NFPA Diamond RTK Labels
2" x 2" - This size works well on a wide range of container sizes.
3" x 5" - The larger size of this label allows larger size type to be used.
4" x 6" - This large size RTK label has plenty of room.
4" x 4" NFPA Diamond - This label is a large NFPA Diamond. Addition text is not printed on this label.

Color Bar RTK Labels
1.4375" x 3" - This tall narrow label is designed for very small containers.
2" x 2" - This label is appropriate for smaller containers.
3.5" x 5" - Use his label for larger containers. It provides enough room to use larger fonts and include more information.

All RTK labels are typically in stock and available for same day shipping.

Global Harmonization of Hazard Classification and Labeling Systems

Changes are coming to the classification and labeling of hazardous materials in the U.S. With different classifications used in various countries, safety was compromised when hazardous materials crossed borders. A new, globally harmonized system of hazard classification and labeling has eliminated these problems. You can read more about global harmonization of hazard classification and labeling on the PHMSA web site.

The DuraLabel 4 easily handles globalization and standardization of hazardous material labeling. DuraLabel 4 supplies are available so that you can make the labels you need. With the versatility and power of the DuraLabel 4 you'll always have a high quality printer that can handle your labeling requirements.

DuraLabel For Printing RTK Labels

The DuraLabel 4TTP label printer comes with database software designed specifically for printing RTK labels. The database comes with information about more than 1,700 chemicals already entered in the database.

With the DuraLabel RTK label software you have the option of printing RTK labels using the NFPA diamond in four different sizes, ranging from 2" x 2" up to 4"x6" labels. In addition, instead of the NFPA diamond you can also print color bar RTK labels.

The DuraLabel RTK software is easy to install and use. A one button installation process automatically installs everything you need. When you run the software a label appears on the screen. To print a label just search the database for the desired chemical* and click on the print button. To create a new label, click on the "New" button and fill in the blanks. It couldn't be easier.

With the DuraLabel printer you get high quality 300 dpi thermal transfer printing. The result is crisp, clear, easy-to-read labels that don't smear or smudge. Plus the DuraLabel is economical. You'll typically save 40% on your DuraLabel supplies when compared with supplies for other machines.

*You should verify the information in the chemical database is appropriate before printing labels for your facility. Please check you MSDS, or other sources, before using the data in the DuraLabel chemical database as there may be variations in concentration, for example, that will effect the hazard ratings.
