Justifying the Purchase of a New Label Printer
Problem: You are in need of a new label printer, but you are having a hard time justifying the decision to go ahead and purchase it. What do you do? Solution: Look at the numbers. Think beyond your current budget and consider the positive, short and long term consequences of purchasing that new DuraLabel printer. In an article published in the October 2008 issue of In-Plant Graphics, Sid Chadwick presents a number of issues for facility managers to consider when justifying new equipment. Here are a few that stood out to me: 1. Equipment Downtime. When a machine is not functioning reliably or frequently stops working, your organization's performance numbers, reputation, and morale declines. Revenue and productivity decreases. An unreliable label printer impacts many other departments! Get an accurate estimate on how that old, malfunctioning, or broken label printer is negatively affecting your organization. 2. Equipment Repairs and Maintenance. We all know repair and maintenance costs are expensive and how draining they are on your organization’s performance and performance expectations. The effect goes beyond the repair bill. A loss in wages that were unproductive (your employees are getting paid for jobs that remain stalled or undone) and unbilled revenues hurts, too. And once again, a broken printer sitting for days or weeks in a repair shop affects many other departments besides the department whose equipment requires repairs. 3. Equipment Productivity. Even though your current label printer may already be paid for, that is not how you should think (it might be to your advantage if your competitors are thinking that way, though!). You want to have the most productive system you can afford. If a new DuraLabel 7000, for example, can produce two or three times as much as what you have, then more work can be done. New projects can be undertaken. And if the new label printer is not only reliable but comes with lifetime customer support like all new DuraLabel printers do, then you can be as productive as you desire! 4. Improved Employee Morale and Reduced Employee Attrition. New technology tends to improve morale, as new skills are required to be learned and demonstrated. Although learning to use a DuraLabel printer is simple, what is exciting is learning about all the things DuraLabel printers can do. Because of the huge range of supplies available, a DuraLabel can handle a wider variety of labeling and sign making jobs than any other printer. Solving labeling and sign problems that previously were difficult to deal with is exciting and interesting. Your employees will have a much more positive experience, making them more likely to enjoy what they do and desire to remain with your organization. For each skilled employee not lost, your organization probably saves at least the yearly wages of that employee. After all, it costs to replace an experienced, valued employee. So keep them productive and happy! Considering issues such as these when justifying new equipment can result in positive consequences for your organization. Look at the numbers, and gain an approximate and representative picture of how your facility's performance can change for the better by investing in new equipment such as a DuraLabel printer. What Gives You An Outstanding Value?
I recently purchased a new car battery. I thought I was getting a good deal until I got home and looked at my receipt. The store clerk had deducted $10 for my turning in my old battery, then he added it back on again. What had felt like a good deal suddenly became a rip-off that made me angry. Maybe it was on honest mistake and he hit the wrong key, but it still did not feel good. A purchase that seemed like a wise decision, and turn out bad. And what initially may seem like a bad purchase, might later appear to be a wise decision. What can you do to make labeling machine purchases that are the right decisions today, and tomorrow? It comes down to several key points: quality, value and customer service. At times low cost, low quality may seem to be the right decision. I do a lot of wood cutting and I've purchases several inexpensive chain saws. The result was that I was purchasing a new chain saw every two years. The first one was great, it lasted five years. Based on that I kept buying another cheap chain saw each time one broke. What a poor decision. I could have spent half the money and had a better machine, that lasted. It's the same with label printers. The major cost in labeling a facility is the cost of installing the labels. If your labels don't last, you'll be spending money to redo work sooner than it should need to be redone... in other words you'll be buying another chain saw. That's why quality is important. Value is also important. Why pay more than you need to pay? But value is more than just the dollar cost of an item. You need to know what you are getting for your dollar, what comes with a printer? How easy is the printer to set up and use? How quickly supplies can be changed? A printer that costs more, in many cases delivers a greater value. It is also important to remember that no matter how good the product is, something can go wrong. That's why customer service is important. Can you call and get answers right away? What happens if your machine needs repair? This is a DuraLabel blog, so obviously I'm talking about DuraLabel PRO industrial label printers. You'd might guess that I'm going to say that the top-of-the-line DuraLabel PRO 300 is more expensive, but worth it. But that's not the case. If you purchase a DuraLabel PRO 300 as a part of a supplies package, you can save enough money to essentially get your DuraLabel PRO 300 free. There is no better price than free! So when you are evaluating quality, value and customer service, take a look at the DuraLabel PRO 300. DuraLabel Accessories
The DuraLabel printer has a number of accessories available that can make your job easier. One of the most popular is the DuraLabel battery. It provides power for the DuraLabel anyplace you need to take your DuraLabel. One battery charge can print hundreds of labels. Many facilities are setting up mobile carts with a DuraLabel printer, battery, laptop computer, and selection of DuraLabel supplies. The cart can then be pushed anyplace labels or signs are needed. It is an excellent way to create a visual workplace and support lean manufacturing efforts such as 5S, Kanban, TPM and Kaizen. One of the most important DuraLabel accessories only costs $20. A dust cover protects you investment in your DuraLabel by keeping dust, dirt and debris away from the printer. This is particularly important if your DuraLabel is stored in a shop, maintenance area, or other location where dust and airborne particles are common. This material can get into the print head or gears and result in poor quality printing, alignment problems, streaks, or other issues. While the solution is simple, get the machine cleaned. The better option is to prevent the problems in the first place. A $20 dust cover accomplishes that goal. If you need to travel with your DuraLabel, then the hard carrying case is what you need. Designed to fit under an airline seat, this case is designed to hold and protect the DuraLabel printer, accessories, cables, and supplies. It's rugged design is guaranteed for life. Easy to use DuraLabel 4TTP
The problem of using something you've never used before is, of course, needing to learn how to use it. This can be an arduous undertaking especially when the device is unfamiliar and not commonly used, such as a label maker/printer. Although desktop printers are commonplace and have been around since before the fall of typewriters, label printers are not as ubiquitous. However, the list of difficult-to-master printers out there does not include the DuraLabel 4TTP. The DuraLabel 4TTP is user-friendly. Everything about it is easy. It is simple to load the supply into the label and sign maker and can be done relatively quickly. Driver installation is a cinch because of the installation CD that comes with the printer. Designing also isn't a problem since the CD also comes with templates and commonly used labels as examples. You can also easily create your own labels by utilizing your favorite word processor, such as Microsoft Word. By examining common and well-known procedures, the makers of the DuraLabel 4TTP were able to create a new uncommon electronic device but apply familiar methods of operation. The result: An exciting label and sign printer that maximizes usability. Labels: DuraLabel Labeler, DuraLabel Software

The Versatile DuraLabel 4TTP
The DuraLabel 4TTP not only produces quality labels economically, it is a versatile label printer. Here are some examples of how the DuraLabel is being used. As shown here, a helicopter manufacturer uses the DuraLabel to identify helicopters as they are being assembled. They use the same number on the parts and documentation storage shelves, making it easy to match the work in progress with the proper documentation and parts. The DuraLabel 4TTP produces quality, clear labels that are easy to read. The durable 300 dpi thermal transfer printing does not easily wear or rub off, making DuraLabel labels excellent for identifying parts, components and documentation that is regularly handled. The ability to print on four inch tapes can be used to make large labels that are easy to read from a distance. At another facility the DuraLabel 4TTP has been used in a variety of ways, including making the gate sign shown to the right. In this case, labels have been tiled together to make a larger sign. With a DuraLabel 4TTP you can make the labels and signs you need. DuraLabel vinyl tapes are suitable for use both indoors and outdoors. They come with a permanent adhesive backing, so you can be sure that once they are stuck, they will stay stuck for many years. The thermal transfer printing is resistant to sunlight and rain, so signs such as the one shown here will provide many years of service.
