Buying A Labeling Machine

What do you need to know before buying a labeling machine?

There is an excellent tutorial on the Industrial Labelers site that discusses this topic. It points out that you first need to determine three things:

1) What kind of labels do I need?

2) How will the labels be used?

3) Where will the labels be used?

These are important questions because they determine the types of supplies that will be required to make the labels you need. Once you've determine what supplies are needed, you can create a short list of labeling machines that have those supplies available.

In some cases there may not be a single labeler that has all the required supplies. For example, if you need to print large 10" x 12" labels for outdoor storage tanks, and also make shrink tube labels for wires, there are no machines that can do both of these. In this case you'll need to look at purchasing two machines. You could then get one machine that prints the large labels and can handle other labeling needs such as RTK or arc flash warning labels. The second machine might then be a small handheld model that electricians can carry with them to label wires and cables on the spot.

There are many labelers available, some designed for specific applications, others--like the DuraLabel 4TTP--that can handle a variety of tasks. The Industrial Labelers tutorial will help you focus on your labeling requirements, but it may also be useful to get recommendations from an experienced labeling expert, such as those at Graphic Products (1-800-788-5572), to determine which specific machines will best serve your needs.
