Pipe Marking in the Hot California Sun

With a goal of creating labels built to last through triple digit California summers, plant operations supervisor Wayne sought out Graphic Products for assistance.

The application? Getting their outdoor plant piping marking scheduling with 4 inch wide labels on 30 inch wide pipes.

The GP team helped Wayne get up to speed about pipe marking color codes, the labeling process and selecting the right vinyl supplies for their application.

Using the DuraLabel PRO, Wayne and his team created and applied the labels themselves, which clearly indicate the direction of the pipe flow.

So far, the feedback from key audiences has been positive.

“We recently we had two regulatory agencies audit our facility and praise our labels — the local county safety inspector and a CAL-OSHA inspector who also shared her thoughts about how other companies should use thermal transfer printers to create and apply pipe markers.”

Pipe markers are used to show the contents and circulation directions of pipes, which if unmarked may be hazardous to repair or maintain. Industrial pipe dimensions and their materials vary greatly.

Wayne came up with a great way to deal with the heat, too.

“As the daily ambient temperature changed, we installed labels in different areas, so in the cool part of the day, the labeling was installed in the open sun area. When the heat of the day arrived, we installed labels in the shaded areas of the plant,” he said.

We can help guide you through specialty supplies such as reflective pipe markers, high temperature pipe markers which can be used on pipes up to 300° and high performance pipe markers which can withstand exposure to chemicals, heat, sunlight, high humidity and outdoor weathering.

The Point of Pipe Marking

DuraLabel printers have long been known for their ability to print a myriad of label and sign applications. Chief among them: pipe markers.

pipe markers

Working in industrial settings, you’ve surely seen your share of pipes in and around the facilities of which you work. Sometimes it seems they’re all you see! In any case, you should know the contents of pipes for your own safety and for the safety of other workers. That is the point of pipe marking. For safety’s sake. The practice of applying pipe markers on pipes is so important it cannot be understated.

Here are a few tips to help you know when and where to apply pipe markers:

  • To indicate direction of flow by labeling with arrows at one or both ends
  • To be visible from the point of normal approach
  • At any line entry or re-entry point
  • Near valves, flanges, and changes in pipe direction
  • On both sides of ceiling, wall, or floor penetrations
  • At least once every 50 feet on straight pipe runs

In short, pipe markers need to be seen by everyone who works on pipes or near them. Want to know more pipe marking tips and standards according to ANSI / ASME A13.1 2007 standards for identifying and labeling pipes?

NEW! DuraLabel’s XpressPeel Premium Vinyl Tapes

Perfect. You’ve just printed a few nice, crisp OSHA-compliant labels to enhance worker safety within your facility. Now, it’s time to apply the labels to the electrical hazards. At times, this step is the step looked forward to the very least. You all know why: fussy fingers fidgeting with the frustrating label liner trying to remove it from the label!

Well, fussy finger fidget no more.

XpressPeel Premium Vinyl Tapes from DuraLabel have a very nice “fuss-free” feature: the liner (a.k.a. backing material) splits down the center for quick and easy separation and removal from the vinyl label supply. And that’s precisely how DuraLabel’s term “XpressPeel” was derived. Pretty great, right? What’s extra great is now this part of the labeling task can actually be done with lightweight gloves on—it’s that easy.

XpressPeel Premium Vinyl Tape is available for purchase in eight colors and in 1/2″, 1″, 2″, 3″ and 4″ widths.

PIpe Marking Guide: ASME A13.1-2007

So many pipes, so many pipe markings needed. Where in the world do you begin?!

Well, here’s a good place to start: Graphic Products is offering a free guide to help you get started understanding the ASME A13.1-2007 Standard for the Identification of Pipes.

ASME 13.1-2007 informs you of proper color codes for pipe material properties when marking pipes, including what letter colors be used on specific pipe label colors. For example, let’s say you have a need to create pipe markers for pipes that contain fluids classified as “Toxic & Corrosive.” The free pipe marking guide from Graphic Products conveniently shows you that labels for pipes containing this material must be orange with black letter colors. Do your pipes contain flammable material? You’ll find the answer in this guide, too.

What about pipe label placement? How should you position pipe markers on the pipes themselves, and how many do you need for different piping systems? The Pipe Marking Guide gives tips on what is required for placing pipe markers, too. For example, the guide instructs you to place pipe markers on both sides of a ceiling, wall or floor penetrations so that they are visible from points of normal approach.

Request your free Pipe Marking Guide to the ASME 13.1-2007 Standard for the Identification of Pipes today.
