The NFPA 99 requires that all pipes carrying medical gases be permanently labeled with the contents, direction of flow, and pressure. This requirement includes Oxygen, Vacuum, Medical Air, Nitrous Oxide, Nitrogen, Carbon Dioxide, and more. The text of the label must be at least 3/8" tall and run parallel with the pipe.

Labels must appear in the following locations:
- At intervals of 20' or less
- At changes of piping direction
- Before and after barriers
- On access doors to enclosures containing piping, valves, or other medical gas components.
Valves and cylinders on pipes containing medical gas must also feature labels that indicate the pipe's contents, direction of flow, and pressure. Shut off valve must carry an inscription that states 'Do not open or close valve except in an emergency'.
